Grammar Foundations — Tenses, Agreement and Sentence Building

Accuracy and range of grammar are key criteria in VCE language tasks. Year 11 is the time to make the essentials automatic.

Learning objective: Strengthen core grammar so you can write and speak accurately in past, present and future time frames.

By the end of this lesson you can:

  • I can use past, present and future time frames.
  • I can apply agreement rules in my language.
  • I can build complex sentences with connectives.

Grammar is mortar. Words are bricks; grammar is the mortar that holds them together into something that stands up.

Core areas (varies by language)

TIME FRAMES — past, present and future (through verb conjugations, particles or time words, depending on the language).

AGREEMENT — gender and number agreement (e.g. French, German, Spanish, Italian); verb–subject agreement; politeness levels (e.g. Japanese, Korean); measure words (e.g. Chinese).

SENTENCE BUILDING
• Simple: subject + verb + object.
• Compound: join with "and", "but", "so".
• Complex: subordinate clauses with "because", "when", "although", "if".

ACCURACY CHECK — after writing, check verbs, agreement and word order in separate passes.

Worked example (Medium)

Upgrade the sentence "I went to the beach. It was hot." to a complex sentence.

  1. Connective. Choose a subordinating connective: "because", "when", "although".
  2. Combine. "Because it was hot, I went to the beach with my cousins."
  3. Extend. "…and next summer I will go again."

Answer: "Because it was hot, I went to the beach with my cousins, and next summer I will go again." — shows range of tenses and connectives.

Common mistakes

  • Translating word for word from English Word order and structures differ. Fix: Learn model sentences in the language and adapt them.
  • Using only the present tense Limits range and marks. Fix: Include past and future in every task.
