Building Vocabulary That Sticks — Systems, Spaced Repetition and Word Families
Vocabulary is the raw material of every task. A good system means you learn words once and keep them.
Learning objective: Use effective vocabulary-learning methods organised by theme so words are remembered and usable.
By the end of this lesson you can:
- I can organise vocabulary by theme.
- I can use spaced repetition.
- I can learn words in context and in word families.
Word families are trees. Learn the root and you get the branches: one root word can give you a noun, a verb and an adjective.
Methods that work
- THEME LISTS — organise vocabulary by study design themes (family, environment, festivals).
- SPACED REPETITION — review words at increasing intervals (1 day, 3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks); flashcard apps automate this.
- CONTEXT — learn phrases and example sentences, not isolated words.
- WORD FAMILIES — noun, verb, adjective forms together.
- ACTIVE RECALL — test yourself instead of rereading.
- USE IT — put new words into speaking and writing within a week.
Worked example (Easy)
