How VCE Languages Units 1–2 Work — Themes, Communication Modes and Assessment
Whether you study French, Japanese, Indonesian or another language, VCE language studies share a common structure. Knowing it helps you prepare efficiently from day one.
Learning objective: Understand the structure of VCE language studies at Units 1–2 and plan a study routine that builds all four skills.
By the end of this lesson you can:
- I can name the common themes and the three communication modes.
- I can describe how Units 1–2 are assessed.
- I can plan a balanced weekly study routine.
Same map, different scenery. Languages look very different on the page, but the assessment map — themes, communication modes and skills — is largely the same.
Course structure
THEMES commonly used across VCE language studies:
• THE INDIVIDUAL — identity, family, friends, school, daily life.
• THE [LANGUAGE]-SPEAKING COMMUNITIES — culture, traditions, festivals, food, lifestyles.
• THE WORLD AROUND US — travel, environment, technology, the future.
COMMUNICATION MODES:
• INTERPERSONAL — conversations, emails and messages.
• INTERPRETIVE — understanding spoken and written texts.
• PRESENTATIONAL — speeches, articles, stories and presentations.
ASSESSMENT — Units 1–2 are school-assessed through tasks across these modes. Your school chooses the tasks; check your language’s study design.
