Develop — Ideation, Iteration and Refinement

The develop stage is where ideas multiply and improve. Showing genuine iteration — not just pretty finals — is what earns folio marks.

Learning objective: Generate, test and refine design concepts using a range of methods and media.

By the end of this lesson you can:

  • I can use ideation techniques.
  • I can test and refine concepts.
  • I can select concepts using criteria.

Iteration is sculpting. A sculptor doesn't carve perfectly first time — they rough out, refine, step back, refine again. Designers iterate concepts through feedback until they're refined.

Develop — Ideation, Iteration and Refinement

IDEATION METHODS:
• Brainstorming, mind maps, thumbnails, SCAMPER, mood boards, rapid sketching.

DEVELOPMENT:
• Explore type, colour, layout, form and materials.
• Use analogue and digital methods; mock-ups and prototypes.

TESTING:
• Feedback from users and clients; usability testing.

REFINEMENT AND SELECTION:
• Evaluate concepts against criteria; select and refine.
• Show how feedback changed the design.

| Development activity | Example |
|---|---|
| Ideation | Thumbnails, mind maps, SCAMPER |
| Concept development | 2–3 strong directions |
| Prototyping | Mock-ups, models, wireframes |
| Testing | User feedback, A/B testing |
| Refinement | Adjust based on evidence |

Key ideas at a glance

  • Generate many ideas: Quantity breeds quality.
  • Use feedback as evidence: Document.
  • Evaluate against criteria: Brief.
  • Show progression visually: Folio.

Worked example (Medium)

How should you show iteration in a folio?

  1. Sequence. Show versions side by side.
  2. Annotations. Explain what changed and why (feedback, criteria).
  3. Outcome. Clear improvement towards the brief.

Answer: Sequential versions with annotated reasons for each change.

Worked example (Hard)

Use SCAMPER to develop a water bottle concept.

  1. Substitute. Bamboo instead of plastic.
  2. Combine. Bottle + filter.
  3. Adapt. Collapsible for travel.
  4. Eliminate. Remove plastic lid parts.

Answer: SCAMPER generates sustainable, functional variations.

Common mistakes

  • Presenting only final designs Process is assessed. Fix: Include developmental work.
