Discover and Define — Research and the Brief
The Year 12 folio starts with research and a brief. A strong brief makes everything that follows easier to justify.
Learning objective: Research a design problem and write a brief that defines communication needs.
By the end of this lesson you can:
- I can conduct primary and secondary research.
- I can synthesise research into insights.
- I can write a brief with two communication needs.
Discover and define is detective work. Before solving the case, detectives gather clues, interview witnesses and narrow down suspects. Designers research users and context, then define the real problem in a brief.
Discover and Define — Research and the Brief
DISCOVER:
• Primary research — interviews, surveys, observation.
• Secondary research — existing designs, data, articles.
• Mood boards and precedent analysis.
DEFINE:
• Synthesise research into insights.
• Reframe the problem; define user needs.
THE BRIEF:
• Client, audience, context, purpose, constraints, communication needs and deliverables.
• Check the current VCAA folio requirements for the exact number and type of outcomes.
EVALUATION CRITERIA:
• Derived from the brief to judge ideas later.
| Research method | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Interviews/surveys | User needs |
| Observation | Real behaviour |
| Competitor analysis | Market context |
| Precedents | Inspiration, design history |
| Mood boards | Aesthetic direction |
| Empathy maps/personas | Synthesise user insights |
Key ideas at a glance
- Primary and secondary research: Both.
- Synthesise findings: Insights, not dumps.
- Write a precise brief: Needs, constraints, criteria.
- Frame the problem: "How might we…?"
Worked example (Medium)
Turn research into an insight for a library app.
- Finding. Teenagers rarely use the library catalogue on phones.
- Insight. The current interface is slow and confusing on mobile.
- Design need. A fast, mobile-first search experience.
Answer: Insight: mobile usability is the barrier, leading to a clear design need.
Worked example (Hard)
Write a "How might we" statement for a library struggling to attract teens.
- Insight. Teens see library as quiet and boring.
- Statement. How might we make the library feel like a social, creative space for teens?
Answer: "How might we make the library a social, creative space for teens?"
Common mistakes
- Briefs without constraints Constraints guide decisions. Fix: Include budget, format, time, brand.
