Producing and Evaluating a Media Product
Unit 4 is when the plan becomes a product. Managing production, adapting to problems and reflecting honestly are as important as the final cut.
Learning objective: Realise a production design plan and evaluate the product against intention.
By the end of this lesson you can:
- I can manage production stages.
- I can adapt plans when issues arise.
- I can evaluate the final product.
Producing is launching the rocket. All the planning becomes action: filming, recording, editing. Then evaluation is mission control reviewing the flight — what went right, what to fix.
Producing and Evaluating a Media Product
PRODUCTION:
• Follow the plan; manage time, crew, equipment and locations.
• Record changes and justify them.
POST PRODUCTION:
• Editing for pace and structure; sound design; colour; titles.
EVALUATION:
• Compare the product against the statement of intention and audience.
• Identify strengths and limitations with evidence.
• Seek audience feedback.
DOCUMENTATION:
• Production log showing decisions, problems and solutions.
| Stage | Evidence |
|---|---|
| Production | Footage logs, behind-the-scenes photos |
| Post-production | Edit versions, sound mix notes |
| Refinements | Changes from feedback, with reasons |
| Evaluation | Did it achieve intention? Audience feedback |
Key ideas at a glance
- Follow your plan, adapt sensibly: Document changes.
- Record refinements: Why changes were made.
- Evaluate honestly: Strengths and weaknesses.
- Use audience feedback: Evidence.
Worked example (Medium)
A location falls through on shoot day. How should you respond and document it?
- Respond. Use a back-up location consistent with the mood board.
- Document. Record the change, reasons and impact on codes and intention.
Answer: Adapt using back-ups and record the change and its effect.
Worked example (Hard)
Document a refinement.
- Issue. Test audience missed the twist.
- Change. Added an insert shot of the key clue earlier.
- Result. Second test group understood the twist.
Answer: Issue → change → result.
Common mistakes
- Abandoning the plan without documentation Changes must be justified. Fix: Log and justify all changes.
