Production Design Plans
Unit 3 Outcome 3 is your production design plan — the blueprint for the Unit 4 production. Clear documentation and experimentation are what the SAT rewards.
Learning objective: Develop a media production design plan with documented intention, audience and specifications.
By the end of this lesson you can:
- I can write a statement of intention.
- I can create specifications and planning documents.
- I can document experimentation and decisions.
A production design plan is a blueprint. Builders don't start without plans. Your design plan details intention, audience, codes and documents so anyone could understand — and you can build — your media product.
Production Design Plans
THE PLAN INCLUDES:
• STATEMENT OF INTENTION — purpose, audience, genre, form, narrative and intended effect.
• SPECIFICATIONS — media form, length, codes and conventions, structure, technical requirements.
• PLANNING DOCUMENTS — scripts, storyboards, shot lists, mood boards, schedules, layouts.
• EXPERIMENTATION — trials of techniques, with reflection on results.
• Legal and ethical considerations: copyright, consent, safety.
QUALITY:
• Decisions justified by audience and intention.
• Evidence of development over time.
| Plan component | Content |
|---|---|
| Intention | What you aim to communicate |
| Audience | Specific target and how you'll engage them |
| Media form | Film, photo, podcast, etc. |
| Codes and conventions | Planned camera, sound, lighting, editing |
| Planning documents | Script, storyboard, shot list, mock-ups |
| Experiments | Test shoots and evaluations |
Key ideas at a glance
- Be specific: Exact shots and settings.
- Justify choices: Link to intention.
- Experiment and reflect: Tests inform decisions.
- Professional presentation: Clear documentation.
Worked example (Medium)
Write a strong statement of intention opening.
- Form and audience. "This 5-minute short film for 15–18-year-olds…"
- Intention. "…explores the isolation of a carer, using low-key lighting and handheld camera to create intimacy and tension."
Answer: States form, audience, purpose and key codes.
Worked example (Hard)
Write a justification for a planned shot.
- Shot. ECU of protagonist's eyes, shallow focus.
- Purpose. Reveal fear.
- Link. Supports intention of exploring anxiety.
Answer: "An ECU with shallow focus isolates the protagonist's fear, supporting my intention to explore anxiety."
Common mistakes
- Vague intention "A cool film" gives no direction. Fix: Specify audience, form, purpose and codes.
- No experimentation evidence Experimentation is assessed. Fix: Document trials with screenshots and reflections.
