Extending Work Through Making and Critique
In Unit 3 you extend your collected ideas into artworks through making and critique. The Visual Arts Journal records this development — it is evidence of your thinking.
Learning objective: Extend ideas through sustained making, experimentation and critique, documenting your progress in the Visual Arts Journal.
By the end of this lesson you can:
- I can develop a series of works that extend an idea.
- I can experiment with materials and techniques purposefully.
- I can use critique to improve my work and record changes.
Extending is growing branches. One idea becomes several directions. Some branches thrive, some are pruned — critique tells you which.
Making and critique
EXTENDING AN IDEA
• Make variations: change scale, material, viewpoint or composition.
• Combine influences from different artists in your own way.
• Push technical skill: test, fail, refine.
CRITIQUE
• Present your work and intentions to peers and teachers.
• Ask focused questions: "Does the colour suggest unease?"
• Record feedback and your response — what you changed and why.
VISUAL ARTS JOURNAL
• Dated entries, photographs of work in progress, annotations, artist links, reflections.
Worked example (Medium)
A student’s photographs of empty playgrounds feel repetitive. Suggest ways to extend the series.
- Vary viewpoint. Shoot from a child’s height or from directly above.
- Vary process. Print onto transparent film and layer images.
- Vary time. Photograph at dusk or in rain to shift mood.
Answer: Change viewpoint, process and time of day to extend the idea of absence into new, richer works.
Common mistakes
- Making one large work too early Development comes from multiple trials. Fix: Produce small studies and variations first.
- Ignoring critique Feedback shows how others read your work. Fix: Record feedback and test at least one suggestion.
Practice questions
