Art Elements, Art Principles and Materials — The Language of Making
Art elements and principles are the vocabulary of every critique, journal annotation and exam answer in Art Making and Exhibiting.
Learning objective: Use art elements, art principles, materials and techniques deliberately in your own work, and analyse them in others’ work.
By the end of this lesson you can:
- I can name and use art elements and principles precisely.
- I can explain how materials and techniques affect meaning.
- I can analyse an artwork’s aesthetic qualities.
Elements are letters, principles are grammar. Line, colour and texture are the letters; balance, contrast and emphasis arrange them into a sentence that says something.
Elements, principles, materials
ART ELEMENTS: line, shape, form, colour, tone, texture, space (and sometimes sound, light and time in new media).
ART PRINCIPLES: balance, contrast, emphasis/focal point, movement, rhythm, pattern, proportion, scale, unity, variety.
MATERIALS and TECHNIQUES — each has expressive qualities:
• watercolour: transparent, fluid, delicate;
• oil paint: rich, slow-drying, layered glazes;
• clay: tactile, sculptural, permanent when fired;
• textiles: soft, domestic, often linked to craft traditions;
• digital: reproducible, layered, can include time and interactivity.
AESTHETIC QUALITIES — the overall look and feel that results (e.g. raw, polished, ethereal, chaotic).
Worked example (Medium)
Explain how material choice affects meaning: a sculpture of a house made in (a) concrete and (b) tissue paper.
- Concrete. Heavy, permanent — suggests security, solidity, or institutional coldness.
- Tissue paper. Fragile, translucent — suggests impermanence, vulnerability, memory.
Answer: The same form communicates permanence and weight in concrete, but fragility and transience in tissue paper — material choice transforms meaning.
Common mistakes
- Treating materials as neutral Materials carry associations and qualities. Fix: Explain why a material suits your idea.
- Confusing elements and principles Elements are components; principles are how they are arranged. Fix: Learn the two lists separately.
