The Actor’s Toolkit — Expressive Skills, Performance Skills and Dramatic Elements
These terms are the language of VCE Drama from Unit 1 to Unit 4. Using them precisely now will make every later task easier.
Learning objective: Use and describe expressive skills, performance skills and dramatic elements in your own performances.
By the end of this lesson you can:
- I can name the expressive and performance skills.
- I can name dramatic elements such as tension, contrast and mood.
- I can describe a moment in performance using precise terms.
Skills are your instruments; elements are the music. Voice and movement are instruments; tension, contrast and mood are what you play with them.
Key terms
EXPRESSIVE SKILLS: voice (pitch, pace, volume, tone, pause), movement (levels, posture, tempo, stillness), facial expression, gesture.
PERFORMANCE SKILLS: focus, timing, energy, actor–audience relationship.
DRAMATIC ELEMENTS: climax, conflict, contrast, mood, rhythm, sound, space, tension.
Describe a moment with: SKILL/ELEMENT + EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED + EFFECT.
"By slowing her pace and dropping to a whisper, she built tension before the reveal."
Worked example (Easy)
Describe how sound could create mood at the start of a scene set in a hospital at night.
- Element. Sound.
- Choice. The ensemble makes a soft, steady heart-monitor beep with their voices, with long silences.
- Effect. Creates a tense, lonely mood.
Answer: A soft vocal heart-monitor beep with long silences creates a tense, lonely mood for the night-time hospital.
Common mistakes
- Vague words like "good" or "nice" They don’t describe the choice. Fix: Describe exactly what the actor did.
- Listing terms without effects Effects show understanding. Fix: Always say what the choice made the audience feel or think.
