Exploring Materials, Techniques and Processes Across Art Forms
Unit 1 starts with hands-on exploration. Knowing how materials behave gives you control over how your artworks look and what they communicate.
Learning objective: Explore the properties of materials, techniques and processes across a range of art forms.
By the end of this lesson you can:
- I can name a range of art forms.
- I can test and describe the properties of materials.
- I can work safely with materials and equipment.
Learning your instrument. Musicians learn what their instrument can do before composing. Artists learn what materials can do before making major works.
Art forms and properties
ART FORMS: drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, photography, digital art, mixed media, installation, video.
PROPERTIES to test:
• Opacity/transparency (e.g. gouache vs watercolour).
• Texture and surface.
• Drying time and workability.
• Durability and archival quality.
• How the material responds to tools (brush, palette knife, carving tools).
PROCESSES: layering, glazing, carving, casting, etching, assemblage, digital editing.
SAFETY: ventilation, gloves for inks and solvents, safe blade technique, equipment induction.
Worked example (Easy)
Compare acrylic and oil paint for a student who wants to work in quick layers.
- Acrylic. Water-based, dries quickly, allows fast layering.
- Oil. Slow drying, good for blending but layers take days.
Answer: Acrylic suits quick layering because it dries fast; oil suits slow blending.
Common mistakes
- Skipping material tests Problems appear in the final work. Fix: Always test on samples first.
- Ignoring archival quality Work may fade or degrade. Fix: Note how durable each material is.
Practice questions
Which paint dries fastest?
- Oil
- Acrylic
- Encaustic left warm
- Oil with linseed medium
(1 marks)
Describe two properties of a material you have explored and how they could affect an artwork.
(2 marks)

- Test properties: opacity, texture, drying time, durability.
- Work safely.
- Record what you learn.
