Exploring Materials, Techniques and Processes
Unit 1 encourages wide exploration. Trying many materials now helps you find the ones that best express your ideas later.
Learning objective: Experiment with a range of materials, techniques and processes and evaluate how each could express your ideas.
By the end of this lesson you can:
- I can test materials systematically.
- I can describe the qualities of different media.
- I can choose materials that suit my intention.
Tasting before cooking. Chefs taste ingredients before deciding on a recipe. Artists test materials before committing to an artwork.
Ways to explore
2D — drawing (graphite, charcoal, ink), painting (acrylic, watercolour, oil, gouache), printmaking (lino, monoprint, drypoint), collage.
3D — clay, wire, found objects, textiles, assemblage.
TIME-BASED and DIGITAL — photography, video, animation, digital painting, installation.
SYSTEMATIC TESTING
• Change one thing at a time (e.g. paper type) to see its effect.
• Make test strips or swatch grids.
• Record materials, steps and results.
HEALTH and SAFETY — ventilation for solvents and sprays, safe use of blades and tools, correct disposal.
Worked example (Medium)
You want an artwork about decay. Plan three material tests.
- Test 1. Rusting steel wool on paper to create organic stains.
- Test 2. Layered acrylic with sanding back to reveal worn surfaces.
- Test 3. Tea-stained, crumpled paper prints.
- Evaluate. Compare which best suggests time and erosion; annotate results.
Answer: Test rust staining, sanded paint layers and stained paper, then evaluate each against the idea of decay.
Common mistakes
- Sticking to the one material you already know Limits discovery. Fix: Try at least a few unfamiliar media in Unit 1.
- Not recording the method You cannot repeat a successful result. Fix: Note materials, quantities and steps.
Practice questions
Changing only one variable at a time when testing materials helps you:
- Work faster
- Understand what caused each result
- Avoid using a journal
- Use fewer materials
(1 marks)
Describe how the qualities of one material could support a specific idea.
(2 marks)
Summary
- Explore 2D, 3D, digital and time-based media.
- Test systematically and record methods.
- Match material qualities to ideas.
- Follow health and safety procedures.
