The Structural Lens — Art Elements and Art Principles

The Structural Lens looks at how an artwork is put together — its elements, principles, materials and techniques — and how these create meaning.

Learning objective: Analyse how artists use art elements and art principles to communicate meaning, using the Structural Lens.

By the end of this lesson you can:

  • I can name the art elements and art principles.
  • I can describe how they are used in an artwork.
  • I can link formal choices to meaning or mood.

Looking under the bonnet. A mechanic explains how a car works by examining its parts. The Structural Lens explains how an artwork works by examining its visual parts.

Elements and principles

ART ELEMENTS: colour, line, shape, form, tone, texture, space, sound, time, light.

ART PRINCIPLES: balance, contrast, emphasis, pattern, repetition, rhythm, movement, scale, proportion, unity, variety, figure–ground relationship.

MATERIALS and TECHNIQUES: medium, surface, method of application, scale of the work.

HOW TO WRITE: ELEMENT/PRINCIPLE + WHERE + HOW IT IS USED + EFFECT or MEANING.

Worked example (Medium)

A painting shows a small figure in the bottom corner of a vast grey landscape. Analyse it with the Structural Lens.

  1. Scale. The tiny figure against a huge landscape emphasises human insignificance.
  2. Colour and tone. A muted grey palette with little tonal contrast creates a bleak, cold mood.
  3. Space and balance. Asymmetrical balance and large negative space push the figure aside, suggesting isolation.

Answer: Scale, muted colour and asymmetrical use of space combine to communicate isolation and insignificance.

Common mistakes

  • Listing elements without meaning Description alone is not analysis. Fix: Always explain the effect or meaning.
  • Using "texture" only for physical surfaces Implied texture can be painted or drawn. Fix: Distinguish actual and implied texture.

Practice questions

  1. Which is an art principle rather than an art element?

    1. Colour
    2. Line
    3. Emphasis
    4. Tone

Summary

  • Structural Lens = how the artwork is made and composed.
  • Elements: colour, line, shape, form, tone, texture, space and more.
  • Principles: balance, contrast, emphasis, scale, rhythm and more.
  • Always link formal choices to meaning.
