Social Media Content Creation
Short-form video dominates media today. Creating it well — and responsibly — is a real-world skill.
Learning objective: Create purposeful short-form content for social media responsibly.
By the end of this lesson you can:
- I can plan content for platforms.
- I can use hooks and captions.
- I can consider algorithms, ethics and wellbeing.
Growing an audience is gardening. You don't get a garden overnight. You plant consistently, water regularly, learn what grows and prune what doesn't. Social media content works the same way.
Short-form media
PLATFORM CONVENTIONS:
• Vertical video, hooks in the first seconds, captions, trending audio, hashtags.
PLANNING:
• Purpose, audience, message, call to action.
ALGORITHMS:
• Recommend content based on engagement; can create filter bubbles.
RESPONSIBILITY:
• Accuracy, consent, copyright, digital footprint, wellbeing (comparison, screen time).
| Platform feature | Strategy |
|---|---|
| Hook (first 1–3 s) | Bold visual or question |
| Captions | Many watch without sound |
| Vertical 9:16 | Fills phone screens |
| Consistency | Regular posting, recognisable style |
| Analytics | Watch time, retention, engagement |
| Community | Reply to comments |

Common mistakes
- Chasing views over accuracy Spreads misinformation. Fix: Check facts.
- Chasing trends that don't fit your brand Confuses audience. Fix: Adapt trends to your niche.
Algorithms
Social platforms use algorithms to decide what appears in your feed, often based on watch time, likes, shares and comments.
This can create filter bubbles where users mainly see content that matches their views. Knowing this helps creators and consumers think critically.
