Dance for Camera

Dance on screen reaches millions. Dance for camera combines choreography with film techniques.

Learning objective: Create dance for film using camera and editing techniques.

By the end of this lesson you can:

  • I can choose shots and angles for dance.
  • I can edit dance to music.
  • I can use location to add meaning.

The camera is a dancer. In dance for camera, the camera isn't just watching — it moves, zooms, cuts and chooses what you see. It becomes another performer in the choreography.

Dance on screen

CAMERA:
• Shot sizes (close-up for detail, wide for patterns), angles, movement (tracking, handheld).

EDITING:
• Cut on the beat, match cuts on movement, slow motion, repetition.

LOCATION:
• Site-specific settings add meaning (beach, city, ruins).

PLANNING:
• Storyboard shots; choreograph for the frame, not the stage.

| Camera technique | Effect in dance film |
|---|---|
| Close-up | Intimate detail (hands, breath) |
| Wide shot | Formations, space |
| Tracking shot | Camera moves with the dancer |
| High/low angle | Power, vulnerability |
| Slow motion | Emphasises suspension, detail |
| Jump cut | Sudden energy, fragmentation |

Key ideas at a glance

  • Choreograph for the frame: Not the stage.
  • Location matters: Site adds meaning.
  • Edit to the music: Cut on beats.
  • Plan shots: Storyboard first.

Worked example (Medium)

When would you use a close-up in dance for camera?

  1. Purpose. Show detail — hands, face, feet.
  2. Effect. Intimacy and emotion.

Answer: To show expressive detail.

Worked example (Medium)

Plan a 30-second dance film in a stairwell.

  1. Wide. Dancer descends stairs in canon with shadow.
  2. Close-up. Hand sliding down the rail.
  3. Tracking. Camera follows a fall-and-recovery.
  4. Edit. Cut on drum hits.

Answer: Mix wide, close-up and tracking shots, cutting on beats.

Common mistakes

  • Filming everything wide Loses detail and energy. Fix: Mix shot sizes.
  • Filming everything from one wide angle Loses the advantage of film. Fix: Vary shots and angles.
