Music Technology — Recording and Digital Audio Workstations

Most music today is made on computers. DAWs like GarageBand, BandLab and Soundtrap let you produce songs from your device.

Learning objective: Use a digital audio workstation (DAW) to record, sequence and mix music.

By the end of this lesson you can:

  • I can record and loop audio.
  • I can use MIDI and virtual instruments.
  • I can balance a basic mix.

A mix is a burger stack. Bass and kick drum are the bottom bun — solid and low. Chords and guitars are the patty and cheese in the middle. Vocals and melody are the lettuce and sauce on top that you taste first. If one layer is too big, the whole burger falls apart.

Music Technology — Recording and Digital Audio Workstations

DAW BASICS:
• Tracks, timeline, loops, MIDI and audio regions.
• Virtual instruments (synths, drum machines).

RECORDING:
• Microphone placement, levels (avoid clipping), headphones to prevent feedback.

EDITING AND MIXING:
• Cut, copy, quantise (snap to beat).
• Volume balance, panning (left/right), effects (reverb, EQ).

EXPORTING:
• Save as MP3 or WAV.

| Tool | What it does | Use it to… |
|---|---|---|
| Volume fader | Louder/softer track | Balance the mix |
| Pan | Left ↔ right | Create width |
| EQ | Boost/cut frequencies | Stop parts clashing |
| Reverb | Adds space | Make sounds feel like a room or hall |
| Quantise | Snaps notes to the grid | Tighten timing |

Key ideas at a glance

  • Gain staging first: Record at healthy levels — no red clipping.
  • Vocals on top: The melody should be clearest.
  • Use reference tracks: Compare your mix to a song you like.
  • Save versions: Keep a copy before big changes.

Worked example (Medium)

The vocals are hard to hear in your mix. What can you do?

  1. Volume. Raise vocal level or lower backing.
  2. EQ. Reduce competing frequencies.
  3. Panning. Spread instruments left/right.

Answer: Balance volume, EQ and panning so vocals stand out.

Worked example (Medium)

Your kick drum and bass guitar sound muddy together. Fix it.

  1. Cause. Both occupy low frequencies.
  2. EQ. Cut a little low-mid on the bass where the kick punches.
  3. Balance. Adjust volumes so each is heard.

Answer: EQ to give each its own frequency space, then rebalance.

Common mistakes

  • Recording too loud (clipping) Distortion ruins recordings. Fix: Keep levels below the red.
  • Mixing with lots of reverb Sounds distant and washy. Fix: Use reverb sparingly.

Bedroom producers

Many artists now produce hit songs at home with a laptop, headphones and a DAW.

Australian producers have built global careers this way, releasing music directly to streaming platforms. The tools are cheap or free; what matters is ear training, patience and finishing songs.

Tip from producers: finish ten average songs rather than one "perfect" song you never complete — you learn more each time.

Practice questions

  1. Moving notes to line up exactly with the beat is:

Summary

  • DAWs record, sequence and mix.
  • Watch levels.
  • Balance with volume, EQ, panning.
  • Give each part its own space with volume, pan and EQ.
