Interpreting a Script — The Director’s Concept and Design Concept

Unit 3 asks you to interpret a script through production roles. A clear concept keeps every choice — acting, direction and design — pointing in the same direction.

Learning objective: Develop a director’s concept and design concept for a script, and explain how production roles realise it.

By the end of this lesson you can:

  • I can write a clear director’s concept with an intended audience response.
  • I can develop a cohesive design concept (colour palette, motifs, materials).
  • I can justify choices with evidence from the script.

A concept is the production’s compass. When the team is unsure, they check the compass: does this choice serve the concept?

Writing a concept

DIRECTOR’S CONCEPT — one or two sentences that state:
• what the production is about (its central idea), and
• how the audience should think or feel, and
• the style or world of the production.
e.g. "A stark, expressionistic staging that traps the audience inside Nora’s growing sense of suffocation."

DESIGN CONCEPT — how the visual and aural world expresses that idea:
• colour palette (e.g. muted greys shifting to harsh white);
• recurring motifs (cages, mirrors, water);
• materials and textures;
• use of space and scale.

Worked example (Medium)

Write a director’s concept and two design choices for a play about a family hiding a secret.

  1. Concept. Central idea + audience response + style.
  2. Set. A pristine living room with one locked door always in view.
  3. Lighting. Warm light that cools whenever the secret is mentioned.

Answer: Concept: "A deceptively warm, realist staging in which the audience gradually senses the rot beneath the family’s perfect surface." Set: a spotless room dominated by a locked door. Lighting: warm washes that cool sharply when the secret surfaces.

Common mistakes

  • A concept that only names a theme ("it’s about grief") Concepts need an intended audience response and style. Fix: Add how the audience should feel and what the world looks like.
  • Design choices that contradict each other An incoherent world confuses the audience. Fix: Check every choice against the concept.

Practice questions

  1. A director’s concept should include:

    1. Only the cast list
    2. The central idea, intended audience response and style
    3. The ticket price
    4. A plot summary only

    (1 marks)

  2. Propose a colour palette for a production about environmental destruction and justify it.

    (3 marks)

Summary

  • Director’s concept = idea + audience response + style.
  • Design concept = palette, motifs, materials, space.
  • Justify choices with script evidence.
  • Keep every role aligned to the concept.
