Ideation and Design Options — Drawing, Modelling and CAD
Ideation turns research into possibilities. Strong folios show many ideas, developed options and a clearly justified preferred design.
Learning objective: Generate and develop design ideas using drawing, modelling and CAD, and evaluate design options against criteria to select a preferred option.
By the end of this lesson you can:
- I can use a range of ideation techniques.
- I can develop design options with annotated drawings and models.
- I can justify a preferred option using evaluation criteria.
Go wide, then narrow. First generate lots of ideas without judging. Then narrow down with criteria until one option clearly fits best.
Techniques and evaluation
IDEATION: thumbnail sketches, mind maps, SCAMPER (substitute, combine, adapt, modify, put to other use, eliminate, reverse), mood boards, quick card or foam models.
DEVELOPMENT DRAWINGS: orthographic projections, isometric and perspective views, exploded views, renderings, annotations explaining materials, joints and dimensions.
MODELLING and CAD: physical mock-ups test scale and ergonomics; CAD enables precise 3D models, simulations and files for CNC routing, laser cutting or 3D printing.
SELECTING A PREFERRED OPTION: evaluate each option against criteria (e.g. a weighted decision matrix) and justify the choice, noting any modifications.
Worked example (Medium)
Use a simple decision matrix to choose between two chair options scored 1–5 on comfort (weight 3), sustainability (2) and cost (1). Option A: 4, 3, 5. Option B: 5, 4, 2.
- Option A. 4×3 + 3×2 + 5×1 = 12 + 6 + 5.
23 - Option B. 5×3 + 4×2 + 2×1 = 15 + 8 + 2.
25
Answer: Option B scores higher (25 vs 23) because comfort and sustainability are weighted more heavily than cost.
Common mistakes
- Only one idea developed Assessment rewards exploring alternatives. Fix: Develop several distinct options.
- Unannotated drawings Annotations show thinking and decisions. Fix: Annotate materials, dimensions, joins and reasons.
Practice questions
Which drawing shows how parts fit together by separating them along their assembly lines?
- Orthographic
- Exploded view
- Thumbnail
- Mood board
(1 marks)
Give one advantage of CAD over hand drawing for developing design options.
(2 marks)
Summary
- Generate widely (sketches, SCAMPER, models).
- Develop options with annotated drawings and CAD.
- Evaluate options against weighted criteria.
- Justify the preferred option.
