Elements of Music — The Vocabulary of Analysis
Whichever Units 3–4 Music study you take, you will analyse how music works. The elements of music are the shared language for every aural question, written response and performance program note.
Learning objective: Identify and describe the elements of music (rhythm, pitch, harmony, texture, tone colour, dynamics, articulation, form) in listening examples using precise vocabulary.
By the end of this lesson you can:
- I can name and define each element of music.
- I can describe how an element is used in a piece with specific detail.
- I can link an element to the character or effect of the music.
Elements are ingredients. Every piece mixes the same ingredients — rhythm, pitch, harmony, texture, tone colour, dynamics — in different amounts. Analysis is tasting and naming them.
The elements
- RHYTHM — beat, tempo, metre (simple/compound), syncopation, rhythmic motifs, rubato.
- PITCH and MELODY — range, register, contour (rising, falling, arch), steps vs leaps, scales/modes.
- HARMONY — chords, progressions, cadences, consonance/dissonance, key and modulation.
- TEXTURE — monophonic, homophonic, polyphonic, heterophonic; thin vs thick; layering.
- TONE COLOUR (timbre) — instruments and voices, playing techniques (pizzicato, distortion, mute), effects.
- DYNAMICS — pp to ff, crescendo, diminuendo, accents.
- ARTICULATION — legato, staccato, accent, slur.
- FORM/STRUCTURE — verse–chorus, AABA, binary (AB), ternary (ABA), rondo, theme and variations, through-composed.
Worked example (Medium)
Improve this description: "The song gets louder and more exciting."
- Name elements. Dynamics, texture, rhythm.
- Add detail. Where, which instruments, how.
Answer: "Into the final chorus the dynamics build from mf to ff as the texture thickens — layered backing vocals and driving eighth-note bass join — creating a climactic, euphoric effect."
Common mistakes
- Using "tone" to mean volume Tone colour is timbre, not dynamics. Fix: Volume = dynamics; sound quality = tone colour.
- Naming elements without location Examiners need to know where in the music. Fix: Use timestamps or sections ("in the bridge, at 2:15").
Practice questions
A melody with a chordal accompaniment moving in the same rhythm is best described as:
- Monophonic
- Homophonic
- Polyphonic
- Heterophonic
(1 marks)
Choose a song you know well. Describe how two elements of music create its mood.
(3 marks)
Summary
- Elements: rhythm, pitch/melody, harmony, texture, tone colour, dynamics, articulation, form.
- Describe with precise terms and location.
- Always link an element to its effect.
- Tone colour ≠ dynamics.
