The Detailed Study — Choosing, Researching and Discussing Your Subtopic
The detailed study lets you explore one area of culture or society in depth — then discuss it in the oral examination. Strong preparation shows deep knowledge and confident language.
Learning objective: Research a detailed study subtopic using a range of texts in the language and prepare to present and discuss it confidently in the oral examination.
By the end of this lesson you can:
- I can research my subtopic using varied texts in the language.
- I can organise key information, opinions and vocabulary.
- I can present and defend ideas in a discussion.
Become a mini-expert. By the exam you should know your subtopic well enough to explain it to a curious friend — and answer their follow-up questions.
Preparing the detailed study
- CHOOSE a subtopic that interests you and has accessible texts in the language (e.g. a festival, an environmental issue, youth culture, a film or literary work).
- RESEARCH a range of TEXTS — articles, interviews, films, songs, websites, literature — as required by your study design.
- ORGANISE notes: key facts, different perspectives, your opinion, and topic-specific vocabulary.
- PREPARE an introduction to your subtopic and anticipate likely questions: Why did you choose it? What did you learn? How does it compare with Australia? What surprised you?
- PRACTISE defending your opinions and linking to the texts you studied.
Worked example (Medium)
A student’s subtopic is "Young people and environmental action in Japan". Plan three likely discussion questions and key points.
- Q1. Why did you choose this subtopic? → personal interest in climate action; comparison with Australian youth.
- Q2. What did your texts show? → examples from an article, an interview and a documentary.
- Q3. What is your opinion? → reasoned view with a counterpoint.
Answer: Prepare points for motivation, evidence from texts, comparison and opinion — with topic vocabulary in Japanese for each.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a topic with few texts in the language Research becomes thin. Fix: Check available resources before committing.
- Memorising a monologue The discussion is interactive. Fix: Practise answering varied questions spontaneously.
