Analysing Your Ensemble Performance
After devising, you write about it. Strong analysis of your own ensemble work is detailed, uses Drama terminology precisely, and evaluates choices rather than just describing them.
Learning objective: Analyse and evaluate how your ensemble used the play-making process, dramatic elements, conventions and skills to create meaning.
By the end of this lesson you can:
- I can describe specific moments of my ensemble performance in detail.
- I can analyse how choices created meaning and affected the audience.
- I can evaluate the effectiveness of choices with justification.
Analysis is a slow-motion replay. Pause on a key moment, zoom in on exactly what happened, then explain why it worked — like a sports commentator breaking down a goal.
Describe, analyse, evaluate
- DESCRIBE — what happened, in vivid detail (who, where in the space, which skills).
- ANALYSE — how the choice created meaning: which element, convention or skill, and what it communicated.
- EVALUATE — judge how effectively it achieved the intention, with reasons; suggest what could be improved.
Useful structure for each moment:
"In [moment], I/we [specific choice], using [term]. This [effect on meaning/audience], which [evaluation against intention]."
Worked example (Medium)
Write an analytical sentence about a moment in which the ensemble used choral speech while slowly closing in on one character.
- Describe. Ensemble speaks in unison while advancing.
- Analyse. Choral speech and use of space create pressure.
- Evaluate. Link to intention about peer pressure.
Answer: "As the ensemble chanted ‘everyone else is doing it’ in unison and slowly closed the space around Maya, the shrinking circle and rising volume built tension and made the audience feel the suffocating weight of peer pressure — effectively realising our intention."
Common mistakes
- Retelling the whole plot Plot summary is not analysis. Fix: Choose 2–3 key moments and analyse them in depth.
- Evaluating only positively Evaluation means judging, including limitations. Fix: Note one choice that could be refined and explain how.
