Developing a Personal Artistic Style and Concept

Your style is your visual voice. Year 10 is the time to experiment widely, find what excites you, and learn to explain your intentions.

Learning objective: Develop a personal visual style and concept through research and experimentation.

By the end of this lesson you can:

  • I can explore ideas from personal interests and issues.
  • I can experiment with media to develop style.
  • I can explain my artistic intentions.

Style is your artistic handwriting. Nobody else writes exactly like you. With practice, your choices of subject, materials and technique become recognisably yours — your artistic handwriting.

Developing a Personal Artistic Style and Concept

FINDING IDEAS:
• Personal experiences, identity, issues, places, objects, memories.
• Research artists who explore similar themes.

DEVELOPING STYLE:
• Repeated choices in media, colour, mark-making, subject and composition.
• Experiment, reflect, refine.

ARTIST STATEMENT:
• Concept, influences, materials and techniques, intended meaning and audience.

AN ART PROCESS (VCE style):
• Explore → expand → investigate → resolve → reflect.

| Ingredient of style | Questions |
|---|---|
| Subject matter | What do you keep returning to? |
| Materials | Which media feel natural? |
| Techniques | Signature marks? |
| Colour palette | Consistent choices? |
| Concept | What ideas drive you? |
