Music Videos and Experimental Media

Music videos and experimental media break the rules of continuity to create mood and meaning. They're playgrounds for creativity.

Learning objective: Create music videos and experimental media using non-traditional techniques.

By the end of this lesson you can:

  • I can match visuals to music.
  • I can use experimental techniques.
  • I can communicate a concept visually.

Experimental media is an art gallery. A gallery doesn't follow rules of storytelling — it explores ideas, feelings and forms. Experimental media and music videos often work like moving art.

Breaking the rules

MUSIC VIDEOS:
• Performance, narrative or conceptual.
• Editing to the beat, visual motifs, lip-sync.

EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES:
• Jump cuts, unusual angles, projection mapping, glitch effects, double exposure, found footage, abstract imagery.

CONCEPT:
• Visual ideas linked to lyrics or mood rather than literal story.

| Technique | Effect | Example use |
|---|---|---|
| Performance-based | Artist performs song | Most pop videos |
| Narrative | Story parallels lyrics | Mini-film videos |
| Conceptual | Visual metaphor/idea | Abstract art videos |
| One-take (oner) | Continuous shot | Technical showpiece |
| Lyric video | Kinetic typography | Release promos |
| Projection mapping | Images on surfaces | Live shows, installations |

Key ideas at a glance

  • Cut to the beat: Rhythmic editing.
  • Visual motif: Repeated image builds meaning.
  • Break rules on purpose: Experiment with intent.
  • Artist identity: Videos build brand.

Worked example (Medium)

How could a music video show a song's theme of loneliness?

  1. Visuals. Empty spaces, wide shots of a lone figure.
  2. Edit. Slow cuts, desaturated colour.

Answer: Wide shots of isolation, slow editing and muted colour.

Worked example (Hard)

Concept a music video for a song about growing up.

  1. Concept. Same room filmed across "years" with props changing.
  2. Technique. Locked-off camera, match cuts.
  3. Motif. A height chart on the wall growing.
  4. Rhythm. Cuts on each chorus.

Answer: Locked-off room with match cuts and a height-chart motif.

Common mistakes

  • Effects without concept Visuals feel random. Fix: Tie techniques to a concept.
  • Random visuals with no idea Feels empty. Fix: Build around a concept or motif.

Iconic music videos

Music videos have pushed visual creativity: Michael Jackson's *Thriller* (mini-film), OK Go's treadmill and one-take videos, Childish Gambino's *This Is America* (layered social commentary).

Many film directors started in music videos — including Spike Jonze and David Fincher.
